Plastic Compounding & Masterbatch Mixing: Paddle-Ribbon and Twin-Shaft Solutions

Plastic compounding and masterbatch mixing: how paddle-ribbon and twin-shaft mixers deliver uniform pigment and additive dispersion, with specs, a real installation and our patent-backed design.
Plastic compounding lives on dispersion. A masterbatch where the pigment clusters in one pellet and starves the next produces streaks, weak batches and customer rejects. The DPH paddle-ribbon mixer is built for exactly this: its combined paddle and ribbon agitator drives convection, shear and radial circulation at once, so colour and additive distributions reach a uniform state in minutes rather than the long drift a single-flow mixer gives you. For the complete equipment range by application, see our plastic mixing equipment page.
What plastic lines actually mix
Compounding covers PVC dry blends, engineering-plastic powders, filler masterbatches, flame-retardant and functional additive packages, and pre-blends ahead of extrusion or kneading. Most are free-flowing to slightly cohesive powders with a targeted micro-additive — pigment, stabiliser, lubricant — that must spread evenly at low let-down ratio. That is the same distribution problem a feed or food premix faces, just at higher filler load.
Paddle-ribbon vs twin-shaft for plastics
For batch masterbatch and colour compounding, the paddle-ribbon mixer is economical, easy to clean between colours and gentle on friable additives. For continuous lines and high throughput, the DJHX continuous twin-shaft paddle mixer fluidises the bed and discharges without opening the vessel, which suits PVC dry-blend and filled compounds running round the clock. For low-residue changeovers the DSHL conical screw mixer is the alternative where heel matters.
Proven in the field
One plastics compounder runs a DPH paddle-ribbon line for its colour and filler masterbatches, charging at 40–60% fill so the convection stays strong, dosing liquids (lubricant, coupling agent) through a spray bar for even coating, and dry-cleaning before each colour change. That is the operating pattern we design around: fast colour change, repeatable CV, minimal heel.
Design backed by our patent
The paddle-ribbon flying-knife concept is protected by our Chinese utility model patent ZL 2018 2 1248590.X, covering the combined paddle-ribbon agitator and chopper arrangement used to break agglomerates during the mix. It is the structural reason a DPH line disperses masterbatch evenly instead of smearing it.
Typical plastic paddle-ribbon technical parameters (DPH)
| Model | Working volume (L) | Total power (kW) | Speed (r/min) |
|---|---|---|---|
| DPH-300 | 100–150 | 5.5 | 53 |
| DPH-1000 | 350–600 | 11 | 42 |
| DPH-3000 | 1000–1500 | 18.5 | 37 |
| DPH-8000 | 3000–4200 | 45 | 27 |
| DPH-15000 | 5000–8000 | 75 | 23 |
| DPH-30000 | 10000–15000 | 135 | 17 |
The DPH family spans 35–15000 L working volume and 2.2–135 kW total power across 17 standard models; the rows above are representative points for plastic duty. Confirm the model with a test blend of your actual resin, filler and pigment.
Selection and sanitation notes
Use SS304 contact parts for most compounds, a fully opening cleaning door and an arc discharge valve flush with the wall for fast colour change, and keep the reducer oil in spec to avoid noise and downtime. Over-specify only the options your resin needs — heating, liquid spraying or vacuum — and leave the rest off.
