Paint & Coatings Mixing: High-Shear Dispersion with Plow and Twin-Shaft Mixers

Paint and coatings mixing: high-shear dispersion of pigment and filler with plow mixers and continuous twin-shaft lines, including water-borne vs solvent duties and our dispersing-knife patent.
Coatings are a dispersion first and a formula second. Wall, wood and metal paints — whether water-borne or solvent-based — all depend on breaking pigment agglomerates down to a stable, speck-free finish. A gentle mixer only smears the grit; a high-shear unit shatters it. The DLT plow mixer is the natural base here because its high-speed flying knives disperse pigment and filler in a turbulent bed in 2–8 minutes. For the complete equipment range by application, see our paint and coatings mixing equipment page.
Water-borne vs solvent duties
Water-borne paints need controlled shear and good wetting; solvent-borne coatings add a flammability dimension that drives explosion-protected drives (see our explosion-proof mixer notes). Both share the same dispersion goal: uniform particle size, no seed, repeatable viscosity. The mixer choice is less about the binder and more about how aggressively the batch must be broken and how much throughput you need.
Plow dispersion vs continuous twin-shaft
For batch dispersions and pastes, the plow mixer with flying knives reaches turbulent blending fast and handles the lumpy, high-viscosity feeds a ribbon would stall on. For high-throughput, round-the-clock lines, the DJHX continuous twin-shaft paddle mixer fluidises and discharges without opening the vessel, which suits base-coat and filler slurries. For low-residue colour change the DSHL conical screw mixer is the gentle alternative.
Design backed by our patent
The high-speed dispersing knife is protected by our Chinese utility model patent ZL 2018 2 1248921.1, covering the flying-knife assembly that breaks agglomerates during the mix. It is the component that turns a plow mixer from a blender into a disperser for paint and coatings.
Typical paint plow-mixer technical parameters (DLT)
| Model | Working volume (L) | Total power (kW) | Chopper (kW) | Mix time (min) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DLT-300 | 120–180 | 5.5–11 | 2.2–3 | 2–5 |
| DLT-1000 | 400–600 | 11–18.5 | 4–5.5 | 3–6 |
| DLT-3000 | 1200–1800 | 22–37 | 7.5–11 | 4–7 |
| DLT-6000 | 2400–3600 | 45–75 | 11–15 | 5–8 |
The plow range spans roughly 100–6000 L working volume and 5–132 kW total drive power; the values above are representative points for coating duty. Final model depends on viscosity, pigment load and whether a chopper is specified — confirm with a trial batch and a dispersion check.
Additives and liquid dosing
Pre-disperse pigment as a press-cake or slurry, dose resin and solvent through a spray bar for even wetting, and keep fill at 40–60% so the bed stays turbulent. After coloured runs, dry-clean then wet-CIP the trough before a different shade; bind the vessel to ground for conductive powders.
